How to make my car sound louder?

i had a 2.4L im my grand am and i cut the exhaust off behind the cat. it had an extremely aggressive growl with the engine still stock, no pissed off weed-eater sound with it. Depending on your local emission laws, this may not be an option though, mine failed in louisiana.
