What's that word meaning to try and remove the customs of a culture (eg the North American Indians)?

I remember using it in eighth grade history, we were talking about how when North America was colonised the white people tried to make the Native Americans like them. Like they made them go to Western schools and wear western clothes and talk in English. There is a word meaning to do this, take away their customs and make them live like the European settlers.. I can't remember what the word is and it is annoying me! If anyone knows could you please tell me, thanks!!
