How did English settlers first communicate with the native American tribes who had never heard English?

And vice versa.... The Englishmen, prior to the 1600s didn't even know America existed. How did they possibly communicate with all of the different native tribes and their regional dialects and languages, to the point of calling a native leader "King Philip". Translators were not trained in translating English to native dialects or the other way around.
