Were the European settlers in the USA generally more religious?

What type of people usually left Europe to settle in what we call the USA today? I heard someone say it was usually the more religious segments of European countries that left their homes to come to America... Is there any truth in that? Or was there no difference in the levels of religiosity between people who stayed behind in Europe and those who left Europe?
